Welcome to Tau Ai Te Ira – life is my right It is our collective responsibility to build a shield of protection around the security of our pēpi and their guardians. Abusive head trauma, also known as shaken baby, is a harrowing reality that leaves a lasting scar on the lives of the innocent and their families. Recognising the urgency and the severity of this issue, we embarked on a journey to design a comprehensive program that could serve as a beacon of hope, guiding us towards a future where every child grows to share their potential with the world. Tau Ai Te Ira is a culturally responsive approach to informing, sharing and engaging in discussions with whānau Māori around shaken baby.
Our journey began with a commitment to incorporate and acknowledge Te Ao Maori and cultural practices. Armed with knowledge and inspiration, we set out to adapt the current strategies to suit the unique cultural context and challenges faced by our communities here in Aotearoa, New Zealand. "Tau Ai Te Ira" (TATI) is a kaupapa maori approach prevention program for preventing shaken baby, abusive head trauma, an endeavor that not only draws upon international evidence but is thoughtfully adapted to address the unique needs of whānau Māori through an inclusive tikanga lead approach. Experts connecting from all corners of Aotearoa, New Zealand have come together to share their knowledge and lived experiences to assist you on this journey. Every year, approximately 25 babies are admitted to NZ hospitals with abusive head trauma – almost one every two weeks, you can be part of changing that and making a positive difference.
